Former Board Chair Opens the 6th Donor Advised Fund at the WFSA
At the end of her term as the Women’s Foundation board chair, Mary Keane felt that she wanted to do more. She and her husband, Jim McCorry, wanted to make a personal impact in the community in an area where she was passionate while, at the same time, they wanted to continue to support the Women’s Foundation. Keane reached out to other volunteers and board members to consider options. Keane says, “Although I was inspired by major donors, Jim and I are just like everyone else. We want to make a difference with the resources that we have.” They ultimately decided to create The McCorry Keane Fund which became the Women’s Foundation of Southern Arizona 6th donor advised fund.
Keane is careful not to over simplify their decision to create a donor advised fund. She acknowledges that they took their time to create the donor advised fund while paying attention to their financial resources, specific areas of interest, and the impact it would make in the community and with the Women’s Foundation.
Keane’s journey in life has taken her through Texas, Ohio, Kentucky and finally to Arizona. In 2005 she moved to Tucson and settled in with her husband. She was new to Tucson looking for ways to be more involved in the community. Fortunately, a friend introduced her to the Women’s Foundation of Southern Arizona. Keane has been a Women’s Foundation supporter ever since – as a volunteer on various committees, a board chair (2009 -2015), and a current member of the Advisory Council. In her leadership roles, she brought her business acumen, skills and perspective to help the Women’s Foundation grow in support of women and girls in Southern Arizona. She says, “I love being part of a team and having friendships.”
Reminded about State budget cuts and the international refugee crisis, Keane wants her donor advised fund to make an impact with the refugee community in Southern Arizona for this year. She is mindful that her focus may change in the future and that, as a donor advised fund, The McCorry Keane Fund gives her the option to decide which area of interest she can support. Her professional career in chemical sales keeps her actively travelling. Whether away or home in Tucson, Keane knows that The McCorry Keane Fund is making a difference in the lives of women and girls in Southern Arizona.
Fun fact: Mary Keane is white water rafting enthusiast. One of her favorite places to go white water rafting is along the Pacuare River in Costa Rica.
A donor advised fund is a philanthropic tool that is established at a public charity. It allows donors to make a charitable contribution to the public charity, receive an immediate tax benefit, and then recommend grant distributions to qualified nonprofits from the fund over time.
