16th Annual Luncheon
More than 800 people celebrated the launch of the Foundation’s Equity and Opportunity Fund at the WFSA annual luncheon on April 29, 2009 at the Tucson Convention Center. New Beginnings for Women and Children and the Primavera Foundation will each receive $75,000 over three years for programs that promote women’s economic self-sufficiency.
An additional $85,000 in annual grants were awarded to six organizations for innovative programs serving women and girls: Arizona’s Children Association, BIO5 Institute, The Haven, Northwest Fire Rescue District, Planned Parenthood Arizona and Youth on Their Own.
The Foundation honored former WFSA board member Helaine Levy for her work in support of numerous community organizations, including the Women’s Foundation. Also honored at the event was Ellen Kirton, selected as the MIX-fm Woman of the Year.
Nneka Okonkwo, representing Unidas, WFSA’s award-winning girls’ philanthropy program, announced their grant to the Southwest Institute for Research on Women for a substance abuse prevention program designed specifically to reach African-American girls.
The luncheon raised more than $100,000 to support the Women’s Foundation’s programs and grant making.
